The Hand Photograph

I have always been a fan of horror movies, books and the horror genre in general. Also being moved by anything to do with the Arts in general, I have also dabbled in drawing and painting many a year ago. Having a "normal" model, in a "normal" setting, then proceeding to change the subject and the environment completely in post process is akin to sitting down in front of a canvas and applying further brush strokes until you get the result you, as an artist, had in mind. This image was originally shot in its landscape format (a 90 degree clockwise turn). I had a female model stand behind the corner, just around the white wall and told her to just show me her hand while pretending to scrape the wall. This was the easiest part. I then proceeded to set the mood by altering the background and the foreground wall as to show more texture and to give a sense of foreboding. Then came the fun part. The process for thinning the fingers, lengthening the nails, adding scratches, blood and bruises and altering the accompanying shadows took hours and a fair amount of dodging and burning, and a natural amount of "starting over". When the final image was ready, I stood back and thought to myself that the subject would have more impact if seen as "coming from under a bed" rather than from behind a wall... I turned the image 90 degrees counter clockwise, applied some further cropping to suit the new aspect, and... voilà! "The Hand" won a "second overall award" in a SWPP competition held in Malta in 2010.
