About The Artwork
This work forms part of a series entitled 'The Interrupted Landscape'. It takes its inspiration from various sources, but principally the New Topographics exhibition of 1975 looking at the man altered landscape. In it I explore, via series of black and white image shot under full moonlight over a period of three months, the way our human presence affects the environment around us. It is not intended as a purely aesthetic 'text' but rather to look at and contemplate our position and place in our world. The view of viewer would ideally be placed within the frame. The influence of the concept 'Horror vacui' or, fear of open uninterrupted space, forms another influence in this series that suggests how to relate mentally and emotionally to our existence. The images have a critical stance, but can be enjoyed also as 'sublime' impressions of the the landscapes of Spain.

Steve Young was born in London in 1970. He now lives in the Valencia region of Spain. For many years he has worked on photography projects both commercial and private. Primarily he describes himself as an academically trained art photographer. What does that mean? That all of the work made is underpinned by contextual and visual research, sometimes taking some months to prepare and shoot a project. The work, although not always obvious, offers the viewer both a critique of the situation that is photographed as well as an aesthetic experience. He is an experienced meditator. Over the years of photography practice the motivations to make photos have changed. In the beginning the desire was simply to get the best looking shot. As time has evolved, his artistic vision has deepened and aligned itself more with the voice of experience as an observer of outer and inner phenomia. Photography for Steve Young, is almost always a practice in time of patience and reflection, never rushed or hurried. In many cases the maturation of a body of work can take months or year.
