The Joseph Beuys studio/classroom at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art Photograph

The story behind this unique series of photographs: In 1984 I received permission to visit and photo document the Joseph Beuys studio/classroom at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf, the original intention of my visit was to do an informal portrait session with Joseph Beuys. On my arrival at the Academy I was told that he was seriously ill and would not be available for the informal portrait session. After my initial disappointment my reaction was then to document, step by step, every part of this small classroom studio and seek to create a unique photo document of this creative space. On my return to Canada from Germany I filed away the photo negatives in my archives for over 25 years. And now, finally, I can make these photographs available to collectors and art lovers. The personal charisma of Joseph Beuys attracted a large number of students, admirers and critics and this studio/classroom and others became the site of transformation of a whole generation of outstanding artists such as Sigmar Polke, Blinky Palermo, Jorg Immendorf and Anselm Kiefer to name a few. The Düsseldorf Academy of Art remains the place where Beuys reflected and planned his numerous controversial performances (actions) and the space where many pedagogical and political interventions originated from. Beuys occupied and used a variety of studio-classrooms at the Academy of Art but this ‘photo series’ concentrates on the last office/studio/classroom used by him from1978 to 1986. ‘To be a teacher is my greatest work of art’ -Joseph Beuys, 1969
