About The Artwork

In this photograph, the library exudes an aura of scholarly tranquility, with rows of bookshelves stretching into the distance like sentinels of knowledge. The warm, ambient light filters through the windows, casting a soft glow upon the weathered spines of the books, each one a repository of untold stories and wisdom. The arrangement of the shelves creates a sense of order and intellectual harmony, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in the world of literature. Amidst this organized symphony of knowledge, a striking disruption emerges at the heart of the composition. A large, haphazard pile of books stands as a rebellious monument to chaos within the otherwise serene environment. The books in the pile are in disarray, their pages splayed open and their covers askew, as if engaged in a spirited dance of literary rebellion. This juxtaposition of order and disorder creates a captivating tension within the frame, challenging the viewer to contemplate the duality of human intellect and the unpredictable nature of creativity. The pile of books becomes a focal point, drawing the eye with its unapologetic disarray, while the surrounding shelves stand as stoic witnesses to the unconventional spectacle. The photograph captures a moment frozen in time, where the clash between structure and spontaneity unfolds in a visual symphony of contrasts. It invites the viewer to ponder the intricate relationship between organization and chaos, and to find beauty in the unexpected amidst the familiar embrace of the written word.

I have been a photographer for four decades in New York and currently reside in Brooklyn. My body of work is titled Misbegotten Places, which involves creating small dioramas from photographs I have taken. Through careful camera angles and lighting, these dioramas are transformed into lifelike images that can often deceive the viewer, while always conveying a sense of "misbegotten." The lines between reality and fiction are blurred, as these lifelike dioramas, when photographed, often deceive the viewer with their uncanny realism. However, true to the collection's title, "Misbegotten Places," each scene is infused with a subtle element of the unexpected or the out-of-place, challenging the viewer's perception and inviting them to delve deeper into the narratives woven within these meticulously crafted compositions.
