THE FORGOTTEN CATHEDRAL My friend César Azcárate gave me his book "Forgotten Cathedrals" as a gift when we met, partly because the title of some of my photographs included the term "cathedral" and partly because I had photographed silos from different times. In " Forgotten Cathedrals (Catedrales Olvidadas)" the only metaphorical thing is the title. In this work, César collects practically all the existing cereal silos in Spain. He photographed them, catalogues them, describes them profusely, gives plans and elevations, collects their history and even completes it with interviews. We could say that such an exhaustive exposition fulfill reality, which is precisely what his book aims to do. My photographs of this grain elevator, which I have called "The Forgotten Cathedral", in clear reference to the above, are radically different from reality. First of all, what is perceived is the least essential aspect of these constructions: the enormous grain deposits are not accessible. Those small mezzanines pierced by mostly blue pipes, would only allow an expert viewer to guess what he is looking at. The images in this work could pass for a factory building or a site on the moon. In this way, by decontextualising the spaces, the photograph creates a different reality. The meaning depends solely on the viewer's perception. To reinforce this intention, I took these photographs in the brief space of a morning. In this way I intended not to have the option of a second reading of the space after having analysed the first captures. Forcing the intuition, as opposed to the rational process, generates a special rhythm of fluid and natural work that could give a touch of freshness to photographs that are still of the "pure register" type, characterised by an apparent coldness and precision in the shot.
