About The Artwork

The photograph captures a hauntingly beautiful scene, where the grandeur of decay meets the elegance of antiquity. In the expansive, weathered room, a majestic old-fashioned couch takes center stage, flanked by two walls adorned with towering arched windows. The sunlight, streaming through the windows on the right, casts a radiant glow upon the timeworn floor, the couch and the wall beyond, creating a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow. Above the couch, a grand chandelier hangs like a silent sentinel, its intricate details and faded opulence a testament to the passage of time. A letter, its contents obscured from view, rests upon the cushions of the couch, adding a touch of mystery and intrigue to the scene. The juxtaposition of the elegant yet decaying elements within the composition invites contemplation on the transience of beauty and the enduring allure of the past. The photograph exudes an air of faded grandeur and poignant nostalgia, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in the interplay of light, shadow, and the evocative remnants of a bygone era within the dilapidated yet enchanting room.

I have been a photographer for four decades in New York and currently reside in Brooklyn. My body of work is titled Misbegotten Places, which involves creating small dioramas from photographs I have taken. Through careful camera angles and lighting, these dioramas are transformed into lifelike images that can often deceive the viewer, while always conveying a sense of "misbegotten." The lines between reality and fiction are blurred, as these lifelike dioramas, when photographed, often deceive the viewer with their uncanny realism. However, true to the collection's title, "Misbegotten Places," each scene is infused with a subtle element of the unexpected or the out-of-place, challenging the viewer's perception and inviting them to delve deeper into the narratives woven within these meticulously crafted compositions.
