About The Artwork

I have a continuing series of car photos that I like to think are only sort of about the car itself. This one has a soulful Simpatico beer billboard that has been torn asunder by the rain. I used a vintage Polaroid camera with P/N film stock--it yielded print immediately (or in 60 seconds), and as is the case here also provided a negative from which additional prints could be made. The full size of the original negative has been drum scanned so you get that signature cool Polaroid rebate border. If included it can detract or compete with the image, but I think pure fun here. This image is printed on Canson Rag Photographique paper, a matte surface that I use when I want to depart just slightly from a photographic reality. The paper size is 8"x10" and the image itself is close to contact print size at approx 4 1/8" wide by 3 1/2" tall. This print is not framed, but is window matted with archival quality rag board to a standard 8"x10" size. I have self-published a couple photo books, and this one is included in my book of Los Angeles photos. The actual photo was made in 1990 with prints made in 2022 This is Edition #1 of 10 + 2 A/Ps

I have worked most of my professional life in the movies. That experience has left me with an instinct toward a narrative in my photos. Not always as a straightforward story, but at least as a structure to organize pieces of an image to work together. I look to elevate the mundane in my work, to create an image that rewards repeated visits. Much of my work is a continuing portrait of Los Angeles. I moved to Los Angeles as a young man to go to UCLA Film School, and it turned into a lifelong adventure. I have collected some in my self-published book “Small Pieces of Los Angeles briefly Illuminated”.
