About The Artwork

The simplicity of this image belies how difficult it was to capture. Urangan Pier projects 868 meters out into the sea from Hervey Bay on the east coast of Queenaland, Australia. Originaly built for trains carring sugar cane out to waiting cargo ships, it is now a tourist destination and popular fishing spot. The shot was taken at dawn, just as the rising Sun was starting to light up the horison. However, the pier and ocean were still dark to the naked eye. This made composing the image very difficult, as I could not actually see much. I used the light from my mobile phone to light my way. I also had to contend with waves and moving sand that did their best to shake my camera. I delt with this by allowing the feet of my tripod to settle into the sand. After about 5 minutes of buffeting, the tripod was resonably stable. Because the scean was essentially pitch black to the eye, I needed a long exposure to illuminate the image. 45 seconds was enough to get a good exposure. The movement of the waves turned into a beautiful silky elimant, that matches the underside of the pier itself. The pilons disapear semilgly into the infinity of the horizon. I was delighted that I won a silver award for this image at the Australian Professional Photography Awards. The print is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Only a maximum of 100 prints will ever be made. Once they have been sold the edition will close and the print will no longer be available.
