Art Beyond Decoration. Should contemporary art have a purpose beyond decoration? Can it be pleasing to the eye at the same time as inciting us to think or reflect on the world that we inhabit?I count myself as one of a growing number of artists who are trying to work beyond decoration and towards meaning. Interested in a celebration of the beauty and wonder of our natural world I also believe that, post the 2020 fires, floods and pandemic, the natural environment needs to be front and centre to the lexicon of Contemporary Art. This is an altered image - altered to allow the imagination to roam - of a very small forest in the middle of the city, in Sydney. It is hard to imagine this place exits as it is predominantly surrounded by concrete - housing and high rise. It is a space for contemplation. A space to dream

As an environmental artist my focus has been on the natural environment for many decades. For the past 20 years I have focused on Trees, a subject I was drawn to for the magnitude of their environmental significance and their universal, pan-religious symbolic importance.I illuminate the natural world both physically and metaphorically. With light I paint a ‘portrait’ of the tree and capture a moment in a tree’s life.I have done this work in many countries around the world. Darkness is a part of vision - it can frame something without destroying it. Through framing the natural world with darkness the specificity of that world is revealed.
