About The Artwork

This project consists of a series of brobdingnagian, digital photographic prints. They are hugely magnified images, of common flora, showing the intricacies and structure often not visible to the naked eye. Historically, there was a practical purpose for depicting plants. As well as capturing their beauty, it was also a way of describing and sharing a plant’s medical properties and hence the need for capturing greater detail gained importance. This body of work is motivated by and explores a long-standing fascination Andy has had with floral illustration and its history. Some of the earliest known floral references date back some 4,000 years to Mesopotamia and Egypt, the earliest depictions consisted purely of text, but soon, illustration became popular and as early as the 1st century AD, illustrated manuscripts such as, “De Materia Medica” by physician & botanist Dioscorides appeared.

Born in Staffordshire, England in 1972 to an English father and Anglo Indian mother, Andrew Carver grew up in and around the contrasting industrial and farming landscapes of the midlands. His life in photography began as an interest and developed into a vocation through higher and further education. After graduating in Fine Art Photography in 1996, Andrew started as a freelance photographic assistant in London working with some of the leading photographers in their fields. His unique and contemporary style did not go unnoticed; in 1998 after being asked to participate in the London Contemporary Photography Fair, the British Journal of Photography (BJP) wrote, “Exhibitors will include many of the UK’s brightest up-and-coming contemporary photographers…Leading names include…Andy Carver.” Still based in London, his work now largely revolves around a long held interest in the inter-relationship that exists between architecture and people. Whilst Andrew has a solid foundation in large format film cameras, he as worked with digital systems since they first arrived on the professional scene around 2001/2. To date his clients include design agencies, corporate clients, architects and construction companies.
