About The Artwork

This photo is part of my series INTO THE LIGHT. The picture was taken in February 2017 on the "Salar de Uyuni" in Bolivia. With more than 10,000 square kilometres, the "Salar de Uyuni" is the largest salt pan in the world. It is located at an altitude of around 4,000 metres, making it the highest salt desert on the planet. The snow-white salt crust was formed over 10,000 years ago by the drying up of the Tauca paleo lake. The brine beneath the crust reaches up to 121 metres in depth. With glaring brightness during the day and very cold nights, the Salar resembles a frozen lake on the outside. It is virtually devoid of any living creatures but is a breeding ground for some species of flamingo found only in South America. From April to early December, the Salar is dry. Except for the muddy shore zones and individual water eyes, the up to 30-metre-thick salt crust can then even be driven over by buses and trucks. The photo was taken during the rainy season, which begins in December. Then the Salar can be covered with several centimetres of water. The still water then forms a huge mirror and creates a surreal space. Standing in the middle of the salt desert, you lose all sense of time & space. Unfortunately, the largest lithium deposit in the world has been found under the Salar. Mining will change this unique paradise forever, so that the "Salar de Uyuni" may no longer exist in this form and untouched beauty in just a few years. You are welcome to get in touch with me if you have any questions.

Tom Jacobi, born 1956 in Bonn (Germany), started photographing when he was fifteen years old. After a short escapade into studying law, he joined the renowned photo agency »Sven Simon« in 1976, at the age of twenty. His main focus laid on taking portraits of leading German politicians, Willy Brandt, Ludwig Erhard, Helmut Schmidt and Helmut Kohl being among them. The following year was the starting point of his long career at »Stern, for which Jacobi worked first as a photographer until 1986. In total he created 29 covers for the magazine, won several awards for his influential work and was appointed to become a member of the »Art Directors Club Germany During the following 14 years Tom Jacobi worked as a freelance photographer. He realised advertising and fashion campaigns and photographed for such magazines as »New York Times Magazine«, »The New Yorker« and »Vogue«. In the year 2000 he returned to »Stern as Art Director and member of the editorial board. In the same year his exhibition »Where God Resides« was presented internationally and the accompanying coffee table book quickly became a bestseller. In 2005 Jacobi founded the magazine »View«, for which he worked until 2008 as editor-in-chief. Since then Tom Jacobi has been pursuing his artistic career. He lives and works in Hamburg. In 2014 he started working on his trilogy »Awakening«, which is composed of three parts: »Grey Matter(s) «, »Into the Light« and »The Light Within«.
