About The Artwork

Silverprint baryt. Briefly about the process behind the pictures. These photos are drawn from a project I've been working on since 1989 up until present. Photographing from small aircrafts and helicopters over a period of many years, the images (all analog and made from negatives) are unarranged snapshots from real life on the surface. None of these photographs have been manipulated in any way and none are taken from drones. The project is in general about humanity. The intention is to look at topography and human activity on the surface of the earth, and through that give some impressions about life here on earth. How the landscape is affected and altered by geological processes, by weather or by man. It is about man in relation to the environment, and therefore also about scale. All the pictures are taken over Norway. Some of the images in the project has allusions to war. The French writer and pilot Saint-Exupéry is a point of reference and an inspiration for this project. Time is important in the sense that the collection of images grows over time. The project was made by waiting in.. situations. Time is a short shutterspeed. Situations can suddenly occur on the ground under the aircraft and the photographer has to be ready to capture the moment that quickly disappears under and behind him. So far, I have made ca 100 large baryta prints from a lab in Paris (Pictou).

I have been working on the aerial photography as a theme since 1989 and up to/till today. Doing photography from the air is about looking at the ordinary from an unusual perspective. The purpose of the project is, among several things, to look at human activity down on the earth's surface. Furthermore, it is about the landscape's topography, about architecture, about traces of history and about how the landscape is affected and changed, both by humans and by nature itself. Landscape change occurs both in slow natural processes over time, but also as a result of human activity. Man creates structures and architecture for use for various purposes that affect the landscape. Artificial and natural landscapes "live" in unison and are incessant in a process of slow change. Scale. I am fascinated by seeing us physically small humans in comparison with the big artificial structures we create. Architecture can reveal function, or history, or social contexts. Traces of mountain surface-texture testify to/ past ice ages. I have BFA in photography from the University of Gothenburg, 1985-89. I have participated in a number of exhibitions, and received art grants from the Norwegian Arts Council. Next to aerial photographs, I work with a number of other photo projects. Raymondmosken.no
