About The Artwork

First performed at 1999's Rondout Biennial, 'Whitewash' is a durational art performance where Durkin literally "paints himself into a corner". Using a paint roller and white paint, Durkin applies the paint to the inside of a large commercial window. When the entire window is covered in paint, the artist then uses a razor blade to scrape the paint away from the glass. Conceptual themes: People are responsible for their own actions. One creates problems through poor choices. The self-imposed confinement is undone through the deliberate labor of dragging the razor. The fact that the freeing action is more difficult than the act of confinement, underscores the reality that redemption is a more difficult undertaking than the ease of failure.

I am a multi-media artist. I make images and experience. My images and performances celebrate the mundane and exalt the everyday to history and icon. I work to achieve a balance between composition, materials and meaning. In my performance pieces, I often make rules and parameters that limit my behaviour - this makes opportunity for artistic exchange. Reoccurring themes create a tempo and pattern throughout my work. Nostalgia, education and learning, family, history, storytelling and diary keeping are concepts that have contributed to my artmaking. Texture and pattern are essential elements in my picture making. It is a visual mixture that dances the viewer's eye across and around the surface. I embrace the ideal of revealing the materials and craft in my work. Breadth and variety of topics and media with a heavy conceptual bent directs my personal practice. Painting, Performance, Printmaking, Collage, Sculpture, Photography, Film and Video
