This photograph is part of a more than ten-year long project to document a small piece of forgotten coastal woodland in Southern Ontario. The project revolves around the idea of the 'immersive landscape' -- the idea that the image should immerse you in the subject, rather than leave you feeling you're admiring it as a distance. The project was inspired by a number of things: the huge sublime landscapes of British painters of the 19th Century such as James Ward's epic Gordale Scar; the work of abstract expressionists like Jackson Pollock; and the photography of the New Topographic school and in particular Robert Adams. I'm also obsessed by the idea that plant life is an alien form that escapes our ability to describe and contain it. The trees were here long before us and they will be here long after us. There's even a sense in which trees are the farmers and we are the livestock. These photographs are an attempt to express that wildness, and strange beauty. Technically, this was a return to using traditional photographic materials and techniques. I used a 1940s Graflex Crown Graphic field camera with a Wollensack 90mm lens of similar vintage. Film was old stock Portra 160 NC developed in C41 chemicals in my darkroom. The image is printed on Museo Silver Rag acid-free paper using archival inks on an Epson 7800 giclee printer. The image itself measures 22" x 28", with a border which takes the overall physical dimensions to 24" x 36".

I'm a professional screenwriter, film director, producer and musician, but my first love has always been photography. I began as a street and documentary photographer, working alongside the 'grand old man of Boston documentary' Roswell Angier. Street photography led me to urban landscape and urban landscape to rural landscape. I've also worked in portraiture. I work in all mediums - digital, stitched digital composites, 35mm, medium format and 4x5. I have a love for analog processes and a full working darkroom, plus a collection of amazing vintage cameras, but I also use cutting edge techniques to produce images which would be impossible to achieve using conventional means. But the tools are always secondary to the image. I'm not particularly interested in making beautiful pictures -- I'd much rather making interesting ones. But sometimes they're both.
