In this series entitled 'Masked,' the masks represent our social self; who we pretend to be, a construct of our environment. The balloons represent our essential selves, who we are hard-wired to be regardless of circumstance. The swirls that appear above the ballerina's head represent the thoughts and stories we believe about ourselves that inhibit us from being our true essential self. I like to use ballerinas and place them in unlikely, often dreary, settings to illustrate the juxtaposition between the social and essential self. I often also include an element of hope in my work, like the journey the ballerina is about to take in this particular piece, which is represented by riding the streetcar. Each piece is a photgraph taken by me, editied and then mounted to baltic birch artist boards that I build. There are mixed media elements added, such as paint, stencil, collage and pencil. Finally, each piece is finished with several coats of varnish to give it a soft painterly feel.

I am a mixed-media artist, living and working in Toronto, Ontario. In August of 2013, I decided to pursue my lifelong passion leaving my position of twelve years as the Director of Sales for a large consumer electronics manufacturer to launch a full-time career as a professional artist. Today, i am represented by several galleries and my works are collected both nationally and international I am a self-taught artist inspired by the casual observation of the people and life around me; my work is constantly evolving, guided by my tendency toward patience, observation, perseverance and, quite simply – effort. My philosophy embraces ‘trial and error’ which I believe are wonderful teachers. Continually looking to incorporate new ideas and mediums I follow a multi-step process when creating my artwork. With a keen eye for texture, design and composition, coupled with a whimsical flare, I seek to create works that are aesthetically engaging while also evoking a visceral response in the viewer.
