I made this photo etched metal plate from a black and white negative from an 80s photo shoot with a woman who had zebra markings tattooed on her back. The design spread from her neck to her bottom. I asked her about the process and the idea behind the tattoo. She explained that she felt an affinity with zebras and that she enjoyed the pain of the process as well as the idea of being 'out there' that such a tattoo engendered. She changed the way I thought about humans relationship to animals, we not only find them attractive, but also we want to experience what they do to, both the wild freedom, the pain and the pleasure. Recently i have pushed myself to make frames for pieces so that they are not drowned out by being behind glass of having a frame that takes over visually. Using a previously painted background and an aged charity shop frame, this all came together finally.
