About The Artwork

Inspired by Italian writer and artist Goliarda Sapienza, goliarda is a sensory tale made of skin, paper and movement, which explores the physical and intellectual desire as a vital energy. Through the exploration of different supports, the texts and calligrams, the film photography in various formats and with various kinds of manipulations such as marks, scratches or pulled development, the use of alternative printing techniques (mostly cyanotype), the images in motion and the self-performance, I explore the urgency of expressing what I felt, and the need to keep those feelings alive. Black and white print on Ilford MG Art 300 fibre-based paper, hand-writing with cyanotype emulsion. With mount.

Giving substance to my thoughts and imagination to prevent their disintegration, such was the primary need of my photographs. Reality is multiform, subjective, changing. There is never a single version of the same story. My entire work aims to capture my multi-faceted perceptions. I seek to capture the interactions between the dimensions of realities - visible / invisible, body / places, past / future - and to interpret them in the form of images. My work is mainly influenced by Slow Photography, Post-Photography and by the feminist avant-garde in photography, but also by Surrealism, Expressionism and, in general, by the performing arts. The realisation of my photographs is itself a performance: I prefer ancient techniques that require touching, manipulating, shaping images manually, and large format photographs that involve a physical commitment. My approach is interdisciplinary. Thanks to my background in physical theatre, I often stage self-performances in front of the camera. My experience of iconography allows me to know and study the meanings of each sign represented in two dimensions in the space of the image, and to pay great attention to each gesture. By mixing images, performances, sounds and dynamic installations, I create a global sensory experience in the onlooker.
