About The Artwork

palantir; minas-tirith The artworks were inspired through the reading of JRR Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings' and the background histories contained within the epic novel. Palantiri: 'Those that watch from afar' are the seven seeing stones brought by Elendil and his sons from Numenor; made originally by Feanor in Aman. The artwork is dominated by the central splash of red in the centre. Red is known to release the hormone epinephrine or adrenaline. This hormone alters your body chemistry, causing physiological changes, commonly known as the 'fight or flight' response. As a result, red is indelibly imprinted on the human mind to connect with excitement and high energy. Minas Tirith, also known as 'Gondor' in the novel, was the final stronghold of the men of Numenor in the Third Age and they alone resisted Sauron and his return to Barad Dur in Mordor. Minas Tirith and its environs were therefore very dangerous due to the proximity to Mordor. The artwork is abstract. It is abstract because within abstract art lies the power for the viewer to bring his or her own experiences to the artwork and see the artwork through this filter, influenced by the colour. Every individual will see and experience something unique to themselves. The power of the palantir is to allow the viewer to see the past, the present and possibly to catch glimpses of the future.

Kristin Hatland is an exhibiting artist with a Bachelor of Applied Arts Visual. A component of her vision and motiviation is informed by her study of logic (cause and effect) while simultaneously applying a normative ethic. The blending of the two philosophical theories provides artistic tension, blurring idealistic expression, driving her fascination with abstract art. An award winning artist, she has exhibited at the Shutter Room in Whangarei as part of the group exhibition Metapherein, was part of the selection for The Exposure Award launched by the Louvre in Paris, and the bastille from her Plato’s Cave series was amongst the finalists and winners included in a tour of New Zealand’s museums and art galleries coordinated by the Wallace Arts Trust. Her artworks are held in collections in New Zealand and overseas
