About The Artwork

Developed from an original sketch conceived on a summer’s day sitting outside this great monument to Victorian Architecture. The work shows the South facing elevation of The Royal Albert Hall from the steps known as Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Steps - formerly the location of the South Kensington Royal Horticultural Society's garden conservatory (demolished in 1889), which provided refreshments and facilities to the Hall’s visitors in the nineteenth century. The hall was originally named the Central Hall of Arts and Sciences, but the title was changed to the Royal Albert Hall of Arts and Sciences by Queen Victoria upon laying the Hall's foundation stone in 1867, in memory of her husband, Prince Albert who had died six years earlier.
