About The Artwork

The title of the series of Monotypes, ‘Anatomy Lessons’, refers to a painting by Rembrandt (The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Deijman), with a particular interest in the shape of the canvas. In these prints the anatomy is perhaps the architecture of the shapes; some thought about the architecture of ancient and megalithic structures has also been an influence. Monotypes are uniquely printed from shaped steel plates and are a result of several gradated layers of pigment combined with a translucent base of copper-plate oil.

Nature derives a strength and economy of form from geometry, its patterns are observed everywhere in the natural world, from molecular structures to planetary systems. In contemplating the interrelationships of planes and colour I find that the universal language of geometry and mathematics provide me with a set of rules or guiding principles.
