About The Artwork

Limited Edition Fine Art Print "Blue Note (If Bill Met Dave)," Edition of 5 Image size 34 x 24 with 3" unprinted border This print is part of a series inspired by listening to music. This particular piece was visualized during a concert played by guitarist Bill Frisell and the debut of his album Big Sur. I wrote about the experience on my blog and then went home and created work in response: "So often when I go to live music I stand at the end, I clap and I leave, and as I walk out of the theater I cannot recall one note, just a vague blur of feeling. As I listened to Bill Frisell and his Big Sur Sextet something else happened. Even as my mind ran into the high meadows, the soaring skies and the surf of this very particular place I could hear with a second ear the jazzness of it, which has its own narrative that lives in no place at all except this exact moment. I could see each note as a shape and a color colliding and riding with the others. Tone shapes and weavings and world-weary minor bending to reliable blue. The sudden shock of melody, but unsure of what that would look like, so very viola it was. My vision tripped and refused to picture: perhaps melody, the one singable memory, is incense after all, or smoke. But snare and drum and brush and repeated incantation, I could see this...." (https://iskrafineart.com/tag/bill-frisell/) The work is composed from black and white charcoal drawings that are deconstructed, colorized and re-composed in imaging software, then printed on rag paper as a limited edition print. By starting with hand made black and white imagery I returned to my own roots in music studying jazz piano, violin and guitar and learning the black and white notation, the scales, the structure of music first. Only after really knowing structure can I go wild with the color of improvisation and melody. This artwork may also be commissioned by special order on canvas or face-mount acrylic.

Throughout my work I explore impermanence as it occurs in the urban landscape and in nature. My architectural prints and mixed media pieces focus on the radical reshaping of the built landscape through gentrification and de-industrialization. As we are confronted with change and our relationship to it, I am interested in the question of how much of the past we value and hold onto, and how much we let go to make the future our “now.” My work lives on the edge between nostalgia and accommodation, mediating through the elements of surface and iconic structure to a conversation about history, identity and sense of place. I have been a calligrapher and letter form artist for much of my professional art career, creating well known brandmarks for film, books and packaging. I have created custom typographic identities for Kitty Kelly, Clive Barker, Naomi Judd, and Anne Rice among others, and movie titling for Dreamworks and Walt Disney. As a fine artist I bring my passion for mark making and the architecture of letter forms into the abstract realm. I have a calligrapher's subtle sense of surface and texture, and incorporate calligraphic mark making into many of my pieces. I use photography, digital composition, printmaking, mixed media and collage, shifting as needed to suit my subject matter. I embrace new media and the infinite ways in which the analog and the digital can be shaken, stirred and poured into a new creative form.
