About The Artwork

This etching is the third of 10 prints in a recent series. My work is inspired by historical anatomic imagery, popular culture, myth and science. These works are the beginning of an attempt to create a new visual system for the Rorschach test, comprised of photorealistic illustrations based on abstract compositions comprised of anatomic structures and taken from 18th century medical illustration texts. The fantastical nature of the anatomic compositions to me reflects the notion of the body as vast, unknown interior space. The current presentation is a suggested framing/mounting style: on medical t-pins (they will be provided) in a float mount.

My work is directed by issues of the human experience, social discord, human animal relations, personal mythology, science, cognition, ontology and epistemology. Post-industrial impediments to social integration and harmony are also central areas of interest in my work. As are a broad range of theoretical discourses including ethics, international relations, behavioral psychology, metaphysics, psychoanalysis and social science. I regard my practice as a visual-spatial extension of these discourses. The widening gap between human need and sustainability has motivated each piece in my portfolio. I see my work, in communicating intellectually complex or ineffable ideas in visceral, emotional terms, as a tool to provoke introspection, catharsis and facilitate awareness. The goal is to thrust something forward and, as Jung said, “… bring the unconscious elements into view so that they may be accessible to the intelligence.”
