I listen to music while I draw. Generally jazz: Hawkins, Holiday, Miles, Evans, Louis. My own instrument is either pen or pencil, plus my stereo system. I'm drawing what I hear, but since I am not a player myself and don't know the instruments from memory I usually draw from old photographs. As with jazz, it's the gaps between the lines, the empty spaces, that create the effect. The uncompleted phrase. The imperfect notes you get when you're hurrying are key. If it's too smooth it becomes facile, canned, slick, bogus. I owe a debt to the greats of jazz album art, notably David Stone Martin, but also Andy Warhol, who got their influence from Ben Shahn and others.
