About The Artwork

This work began when I worked for the Utah Museum of Natural History. I had access to the animal collections and photographed birds. I was impressed by what Bower Birds did to attract a mate by collecting odd items and placing them before the nest. The idea of nesting and human collecting seemed to refer to the homes we build. This also refers to the collections of waste that we build in our landfills.

“Some personal interests are known to us our entire lives. Other interests take an entire life before we truly understand our passions. A full-time art teaching job in Utah moved me from New York to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1977. My paintings represent my feelings about the land of the west.” Susan's recent paintings embrace observation, elements of photography and digital assemblage, with an intuitive appreciation for the natural world. Her initial foray into forests started with trips to the Northwest, then Southern Utah. The trees created a kind of language, speaking directly to her for the first time. While responding to the land’s formal beauty, that day Susan found a joyful way of discovering a living essence of nature in trees. Susan Makov was born and raised on Long Island, New York. As a professional artist for 35+ years she has an extensive list of national exhibitions with a long list of public and private collections. Her work can be found in The National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C., The Southwest Museum, Los Angeles, California, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and many other collections. Susan’s art training began with both of her artist parents, then continued to Syracuse University, Brighton University in the UK, and the State University of NY at Buffalo. She had some wonderful influential and supportive artist mentors, with whom she is still in touch. Graphic designer, Pamela Vassil, who had worked with Milton Glaser, and the painter, Jerome Witkin. Her inspiration comes from fibers artists, the mark making of Alice Neel, and the multiple perspectives of David Hockney.
