About The Artwork

Digital print with screen printed text on top. Print was part of a portfolio exchange. Shown in the Constructed Horizon's Exhibition at 500x Gallery in Dallas this year. Artist Statement -- The boundary between the human body and the world at large is blurred and shifting, and often difficult to identify. It is not simply the physical barrier of the skin, but also the psychological sphere, which exists beyond basic corporeal boundaries. The reciprocal relationship between the physical and the psychological is influenced by greater social circumstances, not just by individual personality. The physical and psychological spheres are both important to the fluctuating public persona and the internally significant persona. The Homosexual community in America has evolved over the years, and it is continually changing. My work focuses on how select individuals in the community maneuvered through their lives during the 1950’s to the 1970’s. Homosexuals, who hid behind false lives to cover up their secrets from the world, carried tons of emotional baggage along the way. The individuals I chose to depict are everyday normal people, allowing for the viewer to see the dual identities of the individual while also seeing a private part of the individuals life. People during this period did not see homosexuality as we do today; rather, it was looked at as a crime. In order to survive, many would masquerade under lavender marriages to cover their secret homosexual relationships. While there might have been speculation on their tendencies, many of the individuals went to the grave without their secret ever being revealed to the public. Many of the images I am working are private photos of closeted men during these times. In my prints, the text used is sampled text from journals of closeted men or love letters that were sent from between two closeted men which I have rewrote in my own handwriting to date the prints to an era when writing to loved ones was more common. Some images have faint veils of locations within the compositions to allow the viewer to possibly give a place of where these interactions or experiences happened.

A Printmaker from the Midwest - Born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri in June of 1991. Studied at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri where he received his Bachelor's of Fine Arts with a specialization in Printmaking in 2014. Now currently pursuing his Master's of Fine Arts in Printmaking at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. Artist Statement -- Nearly a quarter of all hate crimes committed against the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community involve some form of physical or sexual violence. Exploring themes of violence, loss and the dangers of domestic spaces, my work points to the fragility of life not just for sexual and racial minorities, but us all. While these crimes are on the decline, they are still happening and prevalent throughout the United States. Recently several hate crimes in which multiple gay men were attacked within a two month period around a neighborhood of Dallas, Texas caught the attention of the news. Having recently relocated to Texas, I was alarmed that gay men were being targeted due to their sexual orientation. Straddling the line between figuration and abstraction, my prints focus on an individual’s raw expression of defeat after or during specific hate crimes. Allowing the structure of the face to dissolve in the atmosphere of the print allows the viewer to reference the subject in the moment of an attack.
