Original photogravure - this is NOT a mass-produced giclée print! "Evening Orchids" is hand inked and printed on Somerset Velvet 100% cotton paper by Herman du Toit in an open edition. Each print carries the artist's signature and studio chop mark. Each print comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity. You can attach this certificate at the back of the print once it is framed. This very fine study is a prime example of tenebrism (the emotive use of light an shadow) and exemplifies the rich, velvety black tones and the wide tonal range unique to photogravure. According to the J. Paul Getty Museum, photogravure is “the most beautiful, challenging, and labor-intensive of the traditional photographic processes; it is also among the earliest, dating back to the mid-1800s.” Collecting photogravure prints is an emerging category of investment in alternative photographic processes. Edward S. Curtis’s epic anthropological study “The North American Indian,” which he printed from 1907-1930, now command prices in the hundreds of thousands for individual prints.
