About The Artwork

Flock, is an original hand-printed artwork made from a collagraph background with a farmstead and fields with drypoint chine collè birds. The sparrows were printed onto Japanese tissue paper, hand tinted, and used as cine collè with the collagraph background plate printed with oil based ink in the same way as an etching and printed onto 100% cotton paper. When I was a child there seemed to be lots Sparrows in the UK. But they seem few and far between these days. This print intends to create an environment that would make house sparrows happy. Sparrows are finch-like birds. They have stout bodies, rounded wings and broad heads, with deep, conical bills adapted for seed-eating. There are two UK species but several others in Europe, Asia and Africa (American ‘sparrows’ are not closely related). I like to use top quality heavy weight paper (this one is Somerset 100% cotton, Velvet, 300gm, 140lbs) so It is best not to roll up prints for posting, especially when the printing process results in a fair amount of embossing. I will therefore only ship my prints flat and protected with card.

Through my artwork I look to say something about the environment - explore how we interact, use, abuse and collaborate with the natural world around us. This has taken me to interact with specific sites such as a regenerated landfill site and increasingly to focus on the small ubiquitous and often reviled weeds and bugs that form the foundation and engine room of ecosystems. Much of my current practice involves ongoing studies of Devon Hedgerows. Devon has more hedgerows than any other county in the UK, supporting over 600 plant species, 1500 insects, 65 birds and 20 mammals. In addition to studying Devon hedgerows, I have also undertaken projects looking at the importance of urban bees; a celebration of our most rare farm bird being brought back from the brink of extinction; and ongoing observations of local weeds/wild flowers. I am a founder member of Double Elephant Print Workshop and a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen.
