About The Artwork
This is a series of 13 linocut prints on acid-free, archival quality paper. The image size is 6" x 8" and the paper size is 8.5" x 11". Each of these 4-color prints is signed and numbered. In 2017 I walked the last section of the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain with my daughter and granddaughter. I had passed my 80th birthday and was determined to make that 125 km trip while I still could. I had a hip replacement a number of years ago and have an artificial heart valve and also suffer from COPD (breathing challenges) so this was not an easy trip physically. We walked very slowly and stopped often. During one of those rest stops, this bee sat on a flower beside me and I snapped a photo. At the hostel that night, I sketched the bee with an eye to doing something larger and more substantial after I returned to my studio. This linocut print is the result. I've returned to printmaking after a long hiatus during which I concentrated on larger oil paintings. There have been many changes in attitudes towards techniques in printmaking since I pulled my first silkscreen print in the 1950s. New materials, new technology, new inks, the incorporation of digital elements in various stages of a project's development - the ability to experiment with digital prints at home - none of this was anything we could ever have dreamed of when I began. Experimenting with these new techniques is exciting and stimulating and I'm loving the return to printmaking after such a long time.

I was born in Ryhope, UK in 1935. My father was a harness-maker who worked for the local coalmine making harnesses for the pit ponies. My relatives were coal-miners and harness-makers and though they were fine craftsmen in their own right, there was nothing in my upbringing that would have suggested a career as an artist. The passion for creating art was there from the very beginning. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to draw and paint. I have always made sense of the landscape around me by capturing the world in paintings and drawings. Against all odds, I studied art - first in Sunderland and then at the Royal College of Art in London. I exhibited at the Royal Academy in the era of op art, pop art, abstraction, post-impressionism. The early sixties were an exciting time to be in London - the world was changing. Art was changing. It was an amazing time to be a student, to come of age as an artist. My contemporaries were people like Hockney, Frank Bowling, Derek Boshier, Ron Kitaji and Cephas Howard. Mike Pennie and Brian Hagger, Robyn Denny, Peter Phillips, Alayna Hughes, Alwyn Hughes, Ian Potts, Allan Jones.... Those were my peers. It's hard knowing a number of them have already passed away. My first forays into print-making took place in London and it's only recently, some sixty years later that I'm returning to linocuts and silkscreen. I'm thoroughly enjoying experimenting with new techniques and technologies as well as exploring and embracing the changes of thinking that have taken place over the past number of decades.
