About The Artwork

40 Signed Editions Screen Print on 250gsm Fabriano Unica Paper ONE BAD DAY is a concept I produced that conveys relatability and togetherness through the notion that we all have at least one bad day in our lives. For instance, in this piece titled ‘gull attack.’, you see a funny-looking character, whom I named ‘Obdob’, being chased by seagulls for their chips. Those of us who have been to the seaside will understand the cunning nature of seagulls and how having your food stolen by them is very likely. You immediately get an idea of how Obdob is feeling in this moment but you do not necessarily feel sad for them as there is an unspoken comedic quality to seeing someone other than yourself experience an inconvenience, such as having your food stolen by seagulls. This circumstance can be the catalyst to having your day ruined but is not a matter that provokes serious concern and is therefore able to be laughed at. I purposefully opted for a simplistic art style as it makes the imagery easy to view and understand for any age. The combination of black and white makes for a bold and contrasting image, while the decision to only include one colour helps to draw the viewer’s eye to the primary subject matter – in this case, chips.

Originally from Bath, Oscar Ling-Cottey is a junior illustrator and graphic designer currently living and working in London. Ever since he first picked up a pen and paper, Ling-Cottey has had an affinity for drawing, and now having recently graduated with a First-Class Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Illustration & Visual Media from the University of the Arts London, he is now embarking on his journey into the creative industry. In 2021, Ling-Cottey founded his brand, ONE BAD DAY, through which he produces illustrations, art prints, and clothing. Being dyslexic, Ling-Cottey often struggles to put his thoughts and feelings into words, and so instead he prefers to turn them into works of art and let the work speak for itself.
