About The Artwork

In the study of Hydrolic Fracturing, engineering students simulate the way bedrock behaves by injecting gelatin with a colored liquid. The resulting hackles are often quite beautiful. The series of hackles, #1-12 were made after spending a winter stocking shelves in a local grocery store. I practiced a kind of pilfering during this time- - assessing each box or scrap of plastic for its potential in generating a thing. Hackles #1-12 are part of a meditation on a Midwestern perspective toward the landscape. I never felt at home here. I never wanted to feel at home here. I never tried to feel at home here. and so I've tried. Every land is a certain mixture of contradictions. The contradiction of the Midwestern United States, or, simply, "the Midwest" (you'll note the lack of declarative affect with in the 'the') is that it can be the most pristine landscape supplying a bounty of agricultural products to the world..and yet have a complete lack of connection to the landscape..less, a relationship with the landscape..and even less, a land *ethos.* by that I mean a *true* land ethic. Not one couched in capitalism and exploitation. or even in productivity..growth..or any other sort of "promised land" the Midwest is cultureless. it can't possibly claim anything to being a bejewed, "'The,' Midwest" because it doesn't seem to be able to be much of anything by its own right. And that's harsh. Yes. But it also holds a lot of opportunity. Our grasses are still diverse, at least. Even if our lawns cease to be.
