About The Artwork

CURRENTLY NOT FOR SALE! This is an etching of Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom) in Istanbul, Turkey. It was made from sketches I made in 1964 while in the Air Force stationed near Istanbul. The print was made in 1975 while I was the master printer for Appletree Etchers, Inc. The print is 12 x 6 1/2 inches on Arches off white, acid free paper, printed in dark brown ink. It is signed as an “Artists Proof.” The plate was inked and wiped by hand, and printed on a hand driven press. Hagia Sophia was built in 537 and has been a Greek Orthodox Cathedral and a Roman Catholic Cathedral. It was converted to a mosque in 1453 with the fall of Constantinople by Sultan Mehmed II. In 1935, Attaturk established the mosque as a museum. It is 1,479 years old. It is 269 ft in length, 240 ft wide and the dome is 180 ft high.
