A highly original work by this critically acclaimed Yorkshire artist which uniquely combines realism, abstract expressionism, music and historical pictorial narrative to form a compelling account of Napoleon’s ill fated invasion of Russia in 1812. The inner painting tableaux broadly depicts a storyboard for Tchaikovsky’s overture. The tableaux themselves form part of the five musical staves preceded by the large treble clef, the centre of which includes the composer’s face. The first line with greenish tones reflects the Russian activity whilst the line below in blues indicate the corresponding French action. The musical instruments used and then musicians are similarly aligned, shadowing an extract of the musical score appropriate to each segment. The painting covers the whole of the 1812 invasion featuring battles of Smolensk, Borodino, the burning of Moscow and the retreat of Napoleon. Only 10,000 of his initial 650,000 me survived the ordeal, many suffering starvation and hypothermia due to the Russian winter. Outer edges of the painting are in muted realism in contrast with the inner abstract images dealing with the war itself. The left hand side of the work shows Paris in 1812 and references the cause of the war. The right hand side displays Tsar Alexander and Moscow during the same period. At the base we see the French retreat in the grip of winter, Moscow in ruins and the despairing face of Napoleon as he stares towards Paris in defeat.
