Printmaking: Etching, Aquatint, Paper, Drypoint on Aluminium, Paper, Other.
This ETCHING is inspired by and adapted from a photograph taken by Dennis Kovach in Valetta, Malta. (This church is also known as The Rotunda of St Marija Assunta, which was almost destroyed in WWI when a Fascist bomb pierced the dome . . . but failed to explode.) I used the printmaking techniques of INTAGLIO, AQUATINT, CHINE COLLE, and DRYPOINT to create this limited FIRST edition of the print. Seven re-workings of the zinc plate (and consequent acid-baths) were required to obtain by desired results. My media include oil-based, black etching ink on Rives BFK paper (both French). THIS PRICE INCLUDES: 1} THE MATTED ETCHING IN AN ARCHIVAL MAT; 2} A FRAME (11 inch x 14 inch, Type – Glass & Wood Edge / Semi-Ornate Style, Color - Gold); 3} ALL HANDLING COSTS; 4} SHIPMENT COSTS; 5} CARDBOARD SHIPMENT CARTON; 6} BUBBLE WRAP & OTHER PACKING MATERIALS; AND, 7} A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. The work is wired and ready to hang. Framing includes a brown craft paper backing. A wall hook and nail are included. EDITION NOTE: I intend to print the Last (or 4th) Edition in February of 2019 because of astronomical reasons.
Notes on Chine collé Process:
Methylcellulose powder is re-constituted/mixed with spring water and then applied to dyed mulberry-bark paper from Thailand. This is allowed to dry overnight and then cut to fit the plate areas where I want color. The cut mulberry-bark paper is then dampened and placed upon the already inked and wiped etching plate. The printing process then continues and the colored image on paper results. The hand-done process, meaning Chinese pasting, is a difficult one.)
Note on Rives BFK Paper:
• BFK is an acronym for Blanchet, Freres, Kleber. The paper mill of the "Blanchet Frères et Kléber Co." was located in Rives, France.
• The seemingly random letters integrated with the watermark is a confidential security coding for the mill to identify when a batch of BFK paper was made.
• This paper is sometimes misspelled as "Reeves BFK" "Reeve's BFK" and "Rive's BFK" all of which are incorrect.
Sizes/Edition Info: The print size measures about 14” wide by 11” high). The zinc plate size for this (the actual image measurement) is 6” high by 8” wide (15.240cm x 20.320cm). I hand printed this extremely small edition of etchings at Fleisher Art Memorial’s Center for Works on Paper, which sponsors an OPEN STUDIO IN ETCHING in association with The Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. This is the THIRD Best Print of FIVE PRINTS in the SECOND Edition (of Four Editions) as noted on the lower left hand portion of the work—3/5; II of IV).
