I wanted to be able to share some of my favorite wood relief paintings with more people for a less cost as Giclee digetal graphic prints as only printet 30x. "Exercising energy to scratch into the wood created a direct connection between the material and me. It became a bit like my nerve fibers play in the wood when I draw with an intuitive approach. It is the traces we leave behind, relationships and interactions I take with me into the works, in borderland between figuration and abstraction. I work with organic natural materials that reflect our existence, growth and life." The abstract "open heart" is made with a lot of emotion and power cutting into the wood carving and painting, saying something about the marks from life and all the matters we go through. Relief painting arose as an extension of Helgesen's work with woodcuts. Instead of mirroring the motif and blackening the printing plate to create a graphic impression, she works directly in the wooden plate and then combines the relief with inkings and painting layer upon layer, to an original painting on wood.
