About The Artwork

Night train is full of dreams. And it never stops for anyone. Fawaz Rob creates a surreal and yet utopian world of Bangladesh. Each of prints is like a short story. Like Norman Rockwell, his prints are a ‘paused’ scene of life. Enter his utopian world and you embark on a journey through cityscapes, people, everyday objects, unnoticed life and undetected architecture. There is unknown pretty in his urban etchings. They are stark, dramatic and cheerful, recalling Martin Lewis’ early twentieth century New York life…simple joy of living in everyday stories. Night train is very special. It is full of sleeping babies, sleepless bachelors, dreaming maidens and endless conversation with a stranger. Fawaz Rob captures this moment of a long lonely train on a moonlit night. He was leaving a train in the middle of a rural station and felt that he will probably never meet those strangers in the train again. A surreal sense of melancholy overpowered him.

“FAWAZ ROB’s intaglio prints are results of incalculable passion and years of craftsmanship. He recently exhibited in Montmarte gallery in Paris with rave reviews. The art of printmaking requires unusual patience and hundreds of hours of mistakes, accidents and frustrating results. But after long hardship when a breathtaking ‘Print’ arrives, all the sufferings are justified. An artist’s life is a lonely life. He sees the world through his own keyhole and tries to tell a story to an audience he would never meet. Our resident artist Fawaz Rob from Bangladesh, educated in USA and Europe, works in complete seclusion and composes a dreamlike serenity in his art. In a world full of overbearing colors and screaming media, these black and white pieces directs our eyes at the subtle beauty of life. FAWAZ ROB’s art is not pretentious, overtly abstract or uber political to attract the attention of art critics. Rather he practices printmaking the same way Japanese ukioe craftsmen did for centuries: going through the classical training for years and spending long hours in a studio to transform a simple copper plate into a magical scene. His art is universal and can captivate from a staunch art critic to a five year old. I have a suspicion that Fawaz Rob is not here to be ‘famous’. He is here to leave a body of work that will be enjoyed for generations to come. It is recommended that these black and white prints are enjoyed with a Jazz album playing in the background, preferably ‘Saxophone Colossus’ by Sonny Rollins or ‘Kind of Blue’ by Miles Davies. It is also recommended that these prints are enjoyed very late at night, alone in a dark room, when the world quiets down and a sense of nothingness takes over. “ — François Jonquet.
