My work explores the dynamic created between image, object and viewer. Through the use of printmaking, sculpture and moving image, mark making in its many forms is a fundamental area of inquiry; addressing themes such as, failure, dematerialisation, self-reference and the process of making. Through the juxtaposition of objects and images, significance is created through the relationship they share with one another, imbuing each with a sense of performance and mood. Many of my works suggest functionality and performance, offering a trapped moment in flux - slumped prints on paper against a wall, bent aluminum sheets and objects, which imply the capability to print. Invented uses and interpretations between works can therefore evolve in an imaginative sphere. The combination and eclectic mix of different processes and techniques is integral to creating these strange relationships between object and image. The bricoleur is adept at performing a large number of diverse tasks: but, unlike the engineer, he does not subordinate each of them to the availability of raw materials and tools conceived and produced for the purpose of the project (Lévi-Strauss, 1966). Reminiscent of the bricoleur, the range and sometimes "˜-unskilled' production of my objects and images, show the need for creation, explicitly demonstrating the process of making. Prints can be seen to have distressed surfaces, torn edges or crumpled into heaps, often held up by gaffer tape. Wooden structures, which often support paper or suggest functionality through improvisation, are reconstructed from found sources. The conceptual movement between these forms is both one of progression and transgression. It is only through the relationship between these objects that mark making, can evolve (or digress) into different disciplines. Ultimately, the possible arrangements and multi-disciplinarily nature of the work, offers a between-ness, where you find one thing transforms or regenerates into another. I am an Associate Lecturer in Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University and currently undertaking a Masters Degree at Camberwell College for Art; University of the Arts London.
