About The Artwork

From "The Solace of Antiquity" series. The South Facade of The Temple of Poseidon, Cape Sounion, Attiki, Greece. Classical antiquity is omnipresent in Greece, woven into the cultural legacy of the country physically, psychologically and intellectually. It is an immense, epic, unavoidable, and at times, mysterious presence, mostly manifest through its architecture. This drawing project, started in July 2019, explores the themes of omnipresence, permanence/impermanence, and solace. The Temple of Poseidon is known the world over as one most extraordinarily sited temples from classical antiquity. Sitting on a high promontory of the southern most tip of the Attic peninsula, its presence announced the proximity of Athens to ships arriving from the southern Aegean. While mere fragments of it survive today, it is still majestic. The columns and lintels sit high on their plinth - collectively acting as fulcrum between the sea and sky, and a fusion of earth, man and gods. This drawing is a composite based on field sketches and photos taken in July 2019.
