In making this piece I was inspired by Goya's Disasters of War etchings, especially his wild use of aquatint to create many nuances of darkness in the shading. The image is the rubble of Westminster Cathedral struck in an air raid during the Second World War. This piece was made during my Keyholder Residency at the Lower East Side Printshop. It is a hand drawn, etched and printed etching with aquatint. Printed with Charbonnel Graphite ink on Hahnemulhe White Etching paper. I printed it with a sheet of blue rice paper laid on the plate to produce a subtle blueish tone over the image, a technique known as Chine-collé that I explored during my residency.
