WYFIWYG: What You Feel Is What You Get A Tactile Exploration of Understanding In a world often saturated with visual stimuli, we tend to prioritize sight as our primary mode of understanding and appreciation. However, this artwork challenges your assumptions by inviting you to engage with art through a different sensory dimension – touch. Emblazoned onto a simple piece of paper, the acronym WYFIWYG, an intentional twist on the familiar term "WYSIWYG" (What You See Is What You Get) by exchanging „See“ with „Feel“, emerges in raised Braille dots. This seemingly straightforward message takes on deeper significance when we consider the double meanings of the words "Feel" and "Get." In the context of Braille, "Feel" evokes the tactile sensation of encountering the raised dots. „Feel“ on a different level refers to emotions and emotional perception. "Get" also carries multiple layers of meaning. It can be interpreted as the act of receiving or obtaining something, reminiscent of the original intent of WYSIWYG in desktop applications. However, it also alludes to the act of comprehending or understanding something on a deeper (rational) level. By combining these dual meanings, "WYFIWYG" transforms into a exploration of the relationship between feeling and understanding. It suggests that our emotional (and tactile) experiences can lead to profound insights that transcend the limitations of sight / ratio. The sensation of tracing the raised Braille dots alludes to the the most direct perception of this work - what you feel with your finger tips is what you get on a tactile level. Taking the second meaning of both words WYFIWYG reads quite differently - your emotional perception is what you understand - an oxymoron at first glance. But is that such an absurd thought? Being overwhelmed by the beauty of a painting, by music, by the taste of a meal, by friendship, by … - this is something real, something beyond rationality.
