About The Artwork

This installation is directly inspired by a journey David made through Spitalfields, an area of London that has always been on the ‘edge’, geographically and socially. It has a rich, sometimes dark history, and still retains an ‘aura’. The sculpture is constructed of steel with applied imagery, and is arranged as a two-part work that can be walked between and around, allowing the viewer to make their own journey. Walking between the two parts, one face has a mirrored surface to enable the viewer to be reflected and thus become part of the street scene. The images contained within the work have all been photographed locally but in selecting unusual angles and scale, and by juxtaposing unexpected details, the viewer is drawn into an enigmatic world. Dimensions: Two- parts each 3 metres in length, 1.25 metres high and a maximum depth of 1.1 metres Construction: The work is constructed on a steel frame with one mirror-polished stained-less steel panel. The remaining ‘image’ panels are made of di-bond aluminium directly printed at 70 dpi using a digital inkjet system. The work has further layers of a u-v filter and protective lacquer applied.

David Rhys Jones trained at Central Saint Martins and has exhibited widely, including The V&A Museum, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Courtauld Institute. He was joint winner of the Jerwood Prize in 2010, and his work is held in many private and public collections, including the Tate (Artist's Book Collection). Informed by journeys or site-specific locations; they are recorded using photography and drawings. The image becomes an object, a hybrid of sculpture and photography. The artworks record the experience of the location and also create a narrative of the walk.
