My name is Salvatore Vella born in 1979 at Palermo. I am an artist designer, but above all I am a craftsperson. Since when I was a little kid, I use to go to my father’s shop. I learned then the metalworking techniques and I began to develop my creativity. I was always challenging myself, once achieved one goal, I was setting another one. When I did grow up I went to school and got the surveyor’s diploma, but my passion for shaping metals always took the upper hand. Follow my passion I went for some time in UK where I learned about new techniques for metal processing. But my passion grew, so I decided to return to my land. Once back to my origins, I began to create my first sculptures, in them the metal takes shape and colour. In my own personal craft method the fire is the main instrument of modelling process. Through the fire each sculpture gradually assumes its own shape. But there is also a mix of ancient forging techniques with modern welding techniques, power hammering, plasma torch, etc.During the modelling process, I try to convey my mood to my work and to give my sculptures a unique style. This new method of mine allows me to transform a non-precious metal like iron into something beautiful, gentle, light, sinuous and even soft. The versatility of iron is impressive, and once I have understood its properties and abilities, I have worked out how to turn it into something strong and delicate at the same time. My art takes inspiration from John Ruskin’s maxim, historian and art critic “the ornament has two sources of pleasure, the abstract beauty of its forms and the sense of human work and of the attention spent to make it.” This is what I am doing with my work I focus my attention on the care of details that show themselves in all their beauty and in the nobility of work. My works are unique. I do create iron and steel sculptures, but also furnishing accessories, with the particularity of being created entirely by hand
