About The Artwork

This is a portrait of my friend BJ who was diagnosed with breast cancer. She decided to have a double mastectomy and wanted a record of her body before surgery and asked me to cast her torso. The visceral colors on the exterior were to express the deep emotion of her loss. For the interior I chose an iridescent orange symbolizing how the mind can transform and shine through pain.

Amanda Timmins Bio Born, Amanda McKee, in Seattle, Washington, my interest in 3-D art started very early. I remember the delight in using mud and dried grasses to create human faces which I dried in the hot summer sun. I was highly creative as most children are, but had the advantage of my father being a high school art teacher who was generous in sharing surplus art supplies for my entertainment. I spent the happiest of days making creatures in plasticine clay being fascinated by the negative space inside the heads and bodies. I consider myself mostly self taught, although as an adult I took classes at WWU and Emily Carr School of Design and even though receiving top marks, I was dissatisfied at school feeling that ultimately we teach ourselves by doing the work and therefore didn't seek a formal degree. My restless spirit and lack of a self promoting ego led me hither and yon, eventually traveling to Spain, Portugal, France, England, and Ireland enriching my life and artistic journey. Having experimented in many media: ceramic, wood, metal; I now work in mixed media, often glorified paper mache, which allows me to create large and small sculpture fairly quickly needing minimal technology. I incorporate various themes throughout my work including Buddhist philosophy, ideas from quantum physics, ritualistic objects, female energy, and Surrealist whimsy. I have participated in exhibits in local art galleries with high acclaim. My husband has immersed us in his local film work where I contribute my design ability and 3-D talent. We live in Bellingham, Washington, home of hundreds of creative spirits.
