About The Artwork

Breathe through your wounds has been conceived in late February 2020, when Italy was one of the first countries to be affected by the Coronavirus. I independently started my quarantine days before the problem escalated. It is during these days spent in the studio, I wondered about the future after this social crysis, what will happen after this time? How will we change our approach to life, to other human being? One of the main problems will be the conception of the body. We are trying with all our strength to replace the body, inventing its projection, its virtual substitute. This is not something new but now the process has accelerated, as never before. How can we feel the breath, the heat in the simulacrum of the human body? Breathe through your wounds is an invitation to awareness of one’s living body. A body that moves, a body that heats up, a body that occupies a space, that suffers, that is torn, but through its wounds still finds the strength to breathe and reborn.

Beatrice Spadea is an Italian artist, born in Monza (Milan) in 1995. Starting her academic career at the artistic High School Liceo Preziosissimo Sangue in Monza, she then completed her formation attending Painting studies in Milan, at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, graduating in 2017 with honors. Despite choosing the faculty of painting, Beatrice immediately showed remarkable interests in sculpture. As a result, during the years of Brera, her “Fragments” project begins. The Fragments is a series of sculptures, realized in epoxy resin with fragments of different materials: from aluminium to carbon fiber, plastics, vinyl records, natural materials and even fabrics or pages of magazines. Beatrice thus creates a series of masks formed of fragments, closely related to the theme of identity, self-construction, fears and preconceptions. The project is constantly evolving. At completion of her academic path, Beatrice started working in the studio of a well-known artist of the Milan scene. Here, she worked at the conceiving, development and realization of pencil works on paper and acquired new technique, further developing her drawing skills and widening her background in terms of expressive tools. From this moment on, sensing her interest in drawing, but contextually perceived as a sculptural element, the paper role evolves, being no longer just mere canvas, but rather becoming the central element of a sculptural work. Beatrice thus started a project that involves sculptural works, communicating through assemblies of drawings on paper, connected, correlated and interacting in their three dimensional space arrangement.
