About The Artwork

This artwork is from a major exhibition in Melbourne's famous Federation Square called Batmania. The installation saw around 100 bat sculptures suspended from the huge glass atrium. The artwork celebrated the mega bat, or flying fox or fruit bat (the 3 names they are known by). The bats are local residents of Melbourne and live just 5kms from Federation Square. This animal is largely ignored in favour of Australia's cuter animals but their nightly pilgrimage across the night skies are an amazing addition to the city. The bats are listed as threatened with extinction as they cannot cope with temperatures above 40 degrees. 12 percent of the sales of all bat sculptures are donated to wildlife carers that manually cool down bats on hot days with water sprayers and take care of orphaned or injured bats in the homes.
