About The Artwork

"Being" Stoneware Ceramic Sculpture "It took me a long time to find a name that fully reflects what this means to me. The term "being" really captivates this piece, by representing the state of its own material existence, as well as the question of human existence. "To be, or not to be: that is the question:" In much of my artwork, I explore the relationships between human consciousness, its link to the body, and the ties we have to our environment. You can see this question prompted many times in my other work. This work, "Being" is my attempt at a tangible illustration of human consciousness. Each brick represents a moment in ones life. Those moments stack up, brick by brick over one's life, to compose our identity. These experiences become a barrier to shelter ourselves from the environment, and a wall to protect our souls from this world. The face and figure have a likeness to myself. I imagine my mind as a small version of myself that sits in a library filled with books of memories, ideas, and emotions. If you look closely into the ceramic you will see a carved door that opens into my subconscious. This body is the house for my soul. Cities and small homes form around the figure as a representation of growth, creativity, and the physical existence our bodies have in society. Vines are growing into the brick structure to represent the entanglement that nature has with our beings. I include elements of nature in all my work. This is to remind the viewer to embrace the earth, because it is so vital to our being and future existence. I always include sunflowers, because they are a symbol of joy, strength, and growth. The are referred to as the "pilgrim flower" for how their heads follow the sun. They are the spiritual representation of looking to "God" and seeking enlightenment. I believe that each person is the own creator of their world. We built everything we see. We are the makers of our reality. Collectively, we create society and we are responsible for saving our earth. I hope this can inspire the viewer to make positive changes for themselves and the world."
