Before there was a Swirl (see http://remixtd.com/collections/swirl/), there was a prototype meteor. In the early development of remixTD's design studio, the prototype meteor (which is visible today, with modifications, as the smaller of the two main objects in Binary Stars) became the inspiration for all the later designs There was a lot that was revolutionary about the first prototype: it answered many questions about how to use reclaimed industrial foam products as the core for fine art objects; it served as an assembly and design test-bed for how to arrange and construct intricate designs of three-dimensional objects with the core; and it served as an inspiration for the designs in Swirl, in Meteor, and even later, in Polyliths. But Binary Stars is much more than just about influencing other works; it is a magnificent work in its own right. Set on an expanse of weathered copper, it rises up from the surface, tantalizing with the interplay between the two binary meteors and exploring both attraction and repulsion, perfectly in balance with one another. DESIGN NOTES Binary Stars was conceptualized, designed and executed in the Summer and Fall of 2013; some components were created in prototype form in early 2013, but have since been destroyed. Binary Stars is constructed of a complex hammered copper overlaid on wood, and supports for each meteor component are different configurations of brass and copper. The meteors themselves are constructed of structural pulled glass, vintage beads recovered from mid-20th century salvaged objects, metal piping, salvaged metal, vintage acrylics, wooden beads, sea glass, stones, and glass crystal. The foam core was salvaged from industrial usage and formed and shaped to conform to the structure required in the design. SPECIFICATIONS Multimedia work composed of aged copper sheeting, salvaged metal work, vintage beads and wire, and a variety of shapes and sizes. Primary covering materials are glass and rock. Interior base is a foam salvaged core, shaped and formed to design. Dimensions: 26 inches (66 cm) tall, by 17 inches (43.2 cm), by 15 inches (38.1 cm) deep. This work is unique, and no copies have been made nor will any be authorized. Work is signed by REMIXTD studio.
