Text layered in the work: Bitter Milk of Suffragettes weeping season of breast's secrets My use of corsets is an historical reference. It’s written that women donned the first corsets to take a stand. These women were saying no to motherhood and in effect, yes to other possibilities. On the other hand, there are said to be women who broke or removed ribs to create a body to fit the current ideal. History is only storytelling; the truth is illusive. My use of bronze alludes to a long history of protective war implements, in particular, body armor. Using bronze to present intimate, seductive imagery and poetic humor creates a different context for the material. I’m interested in working somewhere between the familiar and the uncomfortable. The imagery may seduce you, but there is a layer of allusion through image and text that gives the work a deeper level of meaning.
