About The Artwork

This piece I created in the second year of my Visual Arts degree. I have been studying into Louise Bourgeois and was highly influenced by herself and Tracey Emin. I believe in breaking down the barriers when it comes to gender and sex. The piece on this side appears to be very phallic, the reverse folding inwards like a woman's vagina. The print on the piece is of a face appearing to be blinded as there are no visible eyes. The piece I didn't intend to represent sex but the mental state of an individual when they are learning about a part of themselves. I hope the viewer of this piece feels liberated when they look at it. Although to some the piece may appear strange, to myself it is a novel.. someone's personal story in a structure. I chose to use ceramic as I initially wanted to create a print of a face that I could create some sort of form with. I work a lot with faces because myself as an artist I am obsessed with societies obsession with identity and what criteria you must fill to be accepted.
