As humans we are adapted to see objects as tools. We define things by their functions. The exhibition Babel interrupts the question ‘what does it do?’ with various methods that remove an object’s identity as a tool. Parts from everyday products are obscured and constructed into mysterious devices or objects of ritual that highlight the wonderful forms that emerge from mass-production. This is an imperfect process. No matter how much the objects are obscured some of their previous identity remains and, in their reconstruction, they often become device-like once again. The question ‘what does it do?’ re-emerges. Only this time the answer is unknowable and open to playful interpretations.

Robert Michael Jones makes sculpture, video, and drawings centered around our relationship with technology. He focuses through an evolutionary lens at the hyper-novelty of the factory made, designed, and increasingly virtual modern environment. He interacts with the history of tools directly by working with high industrial processes like stamping, die casting, machining, and computer-controlled robotics as well as fundamental processes like hand formed clay, stone or wood carving. Robert was born and raised in the rural town of Salisbury VT. He studied art at the University of New Hampshire where he graduated with his BFA in 2009. From there he moved to San Diego where he operated a studio and exhibited regionally. During that time, he completed a public commission In Washington DC, taught local high school students how to apply practical building skills towards community improvement, and helped curate and hang exhibitions at the non-profit Space 4 Art. He graduated from Eastern Michigan University with his MFA in 2021.
