About The Artwork

“Tossed and thrown” If you don't look carefully you won't see what it is about. In short, this is what you can say about the work of Marga Knaven. You have to be very attentive to capture the meaning of her work. Since it is about the space, you can't see it. Having said that, the monochrome pieces also have a structure, which, at a close look, gives away an entire history of the treatment the slab underwent in the process of making the object. Sometimes the piece resembles leather due to the way the slab was waved before folding. Other, seemingly monochrome objects in cooperate concentrations of pigments, produced during the drying-process. This creates a vivid structure and provides the viewer a whole world of possible associations. Her intention is to let the work create itself. She wants her work to be pure and simple, by diminishing the technical aspect to a minimum. In contrast to constructing a sculpture whereby the process is defined mainly by the technique, she allows the material to speak for itself. Kie Ellens

I live and work in the east of the Netherlands on the German border on the Rhine. After my studies at the art academy in Den Bosch (specialization ceramics) I started working with porcelain. The fragile and the beauty of the porcelain particularly appealed to me. Over time, the material and its origins began to fascinate me more and more, that is why I started looking for what the essence of this material was for me. In addition, I developed a working method that is very similar to the way my father worked in his bakery. I started to translate the obtained shapes into other materials aluminum, polystyrene and rubber. Because rubber has different compositions, I started to study the origin and history of the material. Both materials are very valuable industrially. Porcelain used to be referred to as 'white gold' and rubber is 'black gold'. During the covid 19 lockdown I made porcelain works (landscapes) in exclusively white or black. And large hanging black rubber banner objects
